Medical Assistant Prerequisites


Students are strongly encouraged to visit the Assessment Center to assess their Math and English skills necessary to succeed in the program. This program is very demanding and students lacking sufficient fundamental skills in Math and English may find the curriculum and pace of instruction very challenging. Recommended preparation for this program includes: Physiology 1, Math 115, English 101 and the ability to type at least 30 words per minute.

Students must be 18 years of age to enroll in the Medical Assisting Program. Prior to the clinical/field internship, students need to have personal health insurance and must have completed the requirements listed below. The West Los Angeles College Student Health Center provides some of these services at no or low cost and can be reached at (310) 287-4478.

The candidates for this program should also have a minimum of a High School Diploma (or GED).

  • Physical examination
  • Vaccinations verification
    • Hepatitis B
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella). Offered at the Student Health Center.
    • Proof of Absence of Tuberculosis (negative skin test within 3 months of the start of the program)
    • Varicella (Chicken pox) (titer or proof of vaccination)
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR card. This course is available in the WLAC course catalog at varying times throughout the academic year.
