Pharmacy Technicians primarily assist the pharmacist, review prescriptions for completeness and authenticity, help prepare and distribute medications, control inventory and place orders and assist in payment and billing. Clinical Pharmacy Technicians work as part of a healthcare team in a fast-paced environment. The work is very rewarding, including financially. Full-time Pharmacy Technicians earn between $31,000 and $46,000 per year (part-time positions also exist) and often receive benefits. Pharmacy Techs working in a clinical environment like a hospital typically earn 30-40% more per hour, up to $79,000 per year.
Modularized So You Can Start Throughout the Year
The Westside Extension Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program totals over 460 hours of instruction, including valuable clinical training and an externship in which you will receive on-the-job training at a community pharmacy training site. Our comprehensive, certificate program is broken down into 6 class modules, and you can begin your training with 4 of the modules. With this format, you can get started on your new career as a Pharmacy Technician almost any month of the year!
Our program curriculum meets the requirements of the Association of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). When you complete the required course work and meet the state requirements, you are able to obtain a State of California Pharmacy Technician license and can work in retail pharmacies, hospitals and other healthcare settings. Compare our Pharmacy Tech program to ones costing thousands more or offering much fewer hours!
Who Can Enroll?
The Westside Extension Pharmacy Technician Program is open to all students who will be age 18 or above by the time they start their externship. To register for the program, you must pay either the entire program fee up front or pay as you go in three installments. Only students who have registered for the program and paid their class fees may attend class. No exceptions! Registration for this program is handled through the Westside Extension office, not through West's Admissions & Records office.
This is a not-for-credit, fee-based program. While there is substantial rigor and you must successfully pass each module to continue, no grades are earned or transcripted. Your coursework will not apply to a college degree, will not transferable, and will not be counted towards any financial aid (though you may use financial aid funds to pay for the program).
