PROGRAM OVERVIEW: Computer Web Support and Database Administration

The Computer Web Support and Database Administration program at West Los Angeles College is designed to provide students with the expertise needed to work in the exciting world of website development. Students will learn the essential skills most in demand by employers: a solid understanding of HTML5 and CSS3, the ability to use front-end technologies like Javascript and jQuery, as well as a knowledge of server-side technologies like PHP, SQL and Ruby on Rails, plus Web application development.

Web Development: A Broad Range of Strong Job Opportunities

Job Market Trending UpThe job market for web developers is exceptionally strong. To quote the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Employment of web developers is projected to grow 27 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Demand will be driven by the growing popularity of mobile devices and ecommerce."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also notes that the typical entry-level education for Web Developers is an Associate's degree, the same level of education offered at West Los Angeles College. In 2014 the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Web Developers earning $63,490 a year on average, or $30.52 per hour.

The Classes

Computer Science StudentStudents taking CS952 (Introduction to Web Technologies and Design), will learn how to use Dreamweaver CC, the industry-standard IDE (integrated development environment) for web developers, with an emphasis on building modern responsive websites aimed at mobile users. CS957 (Introduction to Web Development HTML5 & CSS) focuses on building a deep understanding of fundamental web technologies. CS962(Web Programming Using Javascript) trains students in Javascript, the most popular tool for bringing web pages to life.

While many students may be familiar with "front end" developers who are responsible for the look and feel of a website, the job market for database administrators who work on the "back end" is also very lucrative. Classes such as CS933 (Database Design and Programming), CS952 (Database Management Using Oracle), CS958 (PHP - MySQL, Ruby on Rails), and CS988 (Microsoft SQL) give students training in crucial database technologies needed for e-commerce websites. And this technology is also used to power the world’s most popular social websites, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Combining both elements of font and back end technology is the world of Web Application development, which is covered in CS963 (Web Application Using ASP.NET).
