General Information

What is the Coronavirus?

The Coronavirus is a respiratory virus that develops into pneumonia and was discovered in Wuhan, China and has spread to a handful of countries including Japan, the United States, Thailand and South Korea.

Symptoms

Fever greater than 100.4 F/ 38 C
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Runny nose
  • Cough and/or difficulty breathing.
The symptoms can appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure. If you think you have been exposed to coronavirus, contact your health care provider immediately.

Mode of Transmission

The virus is most commonly spread from one infected person to others.

  • By close personal contact such as shaking hands or touching
  • By contact with contaminated surfaces and then touching eyes, nose or mouth
  • By air via sneezing and/or coughing

How can you protect yourself?

There is no vaccine. The best way not to get sick from this or any respiratory virus is to regularly get an annual flu shot, stay informed about the situation via official health agency websites, and proactively use the following preventative steps:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick and stay home if you are sick.
  • Frequently wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Cover your cough and/or sneeze into your elbow; or if you use a tissue immediately throw it into the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
