Session Descriptions
9:30 am | Session 1
Creativity and Student Success (GC 160) | Katherine Boutry
What is Creativity Studies? This session presents a new creativity initiative at West, and explores, through fun and quick creativity tests participants will take, how creativity enhances student success.
10:50 am | Breakout Session A
Guided Pathways: Special Guest Speakers 3CSN (GC 160) | Deborah Harrington & Jessica Cristo
Guest speakers from 3CSN will explore Guided Pathways as a creative solution to one of the biggest obstacles our students face: completion. Come find out more in this fun, hands-on breakout session!
Note: this session will be offered twice.
Reading Apprenticeship and Creativity (GC 130) | Tim Welch
This session will be a fun, hands-on introduction to Reading Apprenticeship, and it will provide information about participating in the Reading Apprenticeship Professional Learning Hub. Reading Apprenticeship is a pedagogical approach that focuses on community building and teaching students to become leaders in their own education by modeling how discipline experts approach texts, tasks, and problem solving.
Creativity and Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning (GC 140) | Dolores Gallegos
As an instructor, you already know that students learn best when they make personal connections to what they are learning; that’s how we build meaning and understanding. Culturally responsive teaching is about making personal connections and acknowledging the social capital that our students bring to the classroom. This interactive session will include some self-reflection and provide strategies to best meet the needs of your students. We will present some questions to guide your reflection―and action steps that you can take to help you create a vibrant and culturally responsive environment. This is a great time to evaluate your practice and make some tweaks. Hope you can join us.
Habits of Mind and Creativity (GC 150) | Mary Hardy
In this hands-on session, we will apply Habits of Mind to creative problem-solving and skills-building scenarios.
11:45 am | Breakout Session B
Guided Pathways: Special Guest Speakers 3CSN (GC 160) | Deborah Harrington & Jessica Cristo
Guest speakers from 3CSN will explore Guided Pathways as a creative solution to one of the biggest obstacles our students face: completion. Come find out more in this fun, hands on break out session!
Note: this session will be offered twice.
Just In Time Remediation (GC 130) | Analuisa Castro
This session will provide an interactive introduction to Just in Time Remediation, where we will apply Just in Time Remediation strategies to the classroom.
Creativity and Growth Mindset (GC 140) | Vicky Nesia
In this session we will explore how incorporating growth mindset strategies helps students respond to educational challenges.
Acceleration at West: Creativity Addressing Student Completion (GC 150) | Leslie Tejada
Acceleration – In this session, faculty will explore the redesign principles of English Accelerated classes. Students are too often derailed by the English remedial sequences, making it nearly impossible for them to transfer or graduate. The Acceleration model revises not only the sequence but also the curriculum to give students the best chance at reaching their educational goals. Come to this informational workshop to learn how Acceleration affects all other disciplines across our campus.
1:15 pm | Session 2
Creatively Overcoming Students’ Non-Academic Obstacles (GC 160) | Linda Alexander and The Data Team
In this session, we will collaborate on strategies to address our students’ non-academic challenges.
1:30 pm | Session 3
A Creative Solution: Open Educational Resources (OER) (GC 160) | Cyrus Helf & Linda Alexander
This session will explore the use of OER as a creative response to overcoming one of the biggest obstacles students face: having to purchase textbooks.
