Program Purpose and Learning Outcomes

The International Area Studies degree, with specializations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, or the Middle East, the Global Studies degree, and the certificates in a geographic region or Global Studies, will enable students to pursue multiple pathways to transfer or careers with a strong understanding of one region of the world.  The Student Learning Outcomes for the program are focused on politics and governance, markets, culture and society, languages, and area studies:

  • Develop a process that can lead to insights in understand a culture other than your own.
  • Interact with sympathy and respect to cultural mores, beliefs, and traditions within a global context.
  • Acquire knowledge of the key patterns, themes, events, and figures of the past and present, across the global spectrum.
  • Utilize and exercise available resources to conduct topic investigations in order to be able to analyze what one sees and experiences within a one world vision.
  • Develop cross-cultural competency, empathy, and insight into the human experience that transcends demographic categorizations.
  • Seek out and engage in opportunities that broaden their perspective and increase their responsibility to community both locally and globally.
  • Address social, behavioral, and cultural issues to respond to the challenges of work, family, community, and the world at large.
  • Apply and relate their understanding of international trade and initiatives to develop multiple perspective on globalization issues and their impact on economic decision makers.

Program Description

The International Area/Global Studies Program cultivates global citizens who specialize in either a specific geographic region or study the world from an international global perspective. Those specific areas of study are in politics and governance, markets, culture and society, languages and area studies.

 

A student may opt for either an AA transfer degree in regional studies (International Area Studies) in Africa, Asia, Latin America, or the Middle East, that is articulated with UCLA; or, an AA transfer degree in Global Studies, that is articulated with CSU. In addition to the AA transfer option, a student may take a certificate, a 12-15 unit of study, in either: a geographic region, international business, or Global Studies.

 

This program is designed to offer both students and the surrounding community opportunities for learning and understanding the politics, the history, the language, and the culture of the regions in a specific area of emphasis or the global community as a whole.

 

Student learning outcomes will promote knowledge of a specific region of the world as well as to enhance awareness of a region and its diverse peoples and cultures that together make up the global community.

 

By earning either the degree or certificate option, students will be able to use their knowledge of a particular region or that of the global community in careers in university teaching and research, governmental and non-governmental organizations, business and commerce, journalism, and other personal or professional pursuits.
