Online College - Philosophy
Philosophy is a discipline that begins with asking questions and helps students to navigate the world by training the mind to think critically and creatively in an atmosphere of academic tolerance and excellence.
Philosophical training develops students¹ critical thinking and argumentation skills, analytic problem solving skills, and clear and effective oral and written communication skills. By inducing students to see things from multiple points of view, the study of philosophy can help students in virtually any other discipline they may pursue, including the arts, humanities, sciences, and business.
In a rapidly changing economic landscape, the study philosophy can be useful in developing the flexibility and transferable skills needed in an uncertain marketplace. Students who choose philosophy as their major area of study are introduced to metaphysics, which opens the mind and makes the world a larger place; epistemology, which helps us to understand the nature of knowledge; logic, which teaches us the rules of correct reasoning; and ethics, which helps us to become better people and better citizens.

The Associate in Arts in Philosophy for Transfer (AA-T) is a degree that provides a solid lower-division preparation for students who intend to transfer to a California State University (CSU) for a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy. This degree is designed to provide a clear pathway to a CSU and guarantee admissions to a CSU. Although, students are guaranteed admissions, it is not to any particular campus or program in the CSU system. Students will be required to meet with a counselor for specific university major preparation at the college of their choice in order to facilitate a seamless transition. This coursework will satisfy the lower division Sociology requirements at some of the CSU campuses. Information on which campuses accept this degree can be found at http://www.sb1440.org/
