AB705: Student-centered Approaches for the AB705 Classroom Workshop

Attention to the Affective Domain: Saving Students from Self-Sabotage
Students often arrive in our classrooms with fear and anxiety over their ability to perform well. This self-doubt manifests in several ways: avoiding assessment, missing assignments, and skipping class altogether. Paying attention to students’ emotional needs could mitigate some of the fear-based behavior. This workshop provides faculty members with tangible tools needed to create an environment where students feel welcomed, supported, and academically challenged.

AB705: What the Heck Is It?
On January 1, 2018, Assembly Bill 705 became effective. This bill requires community college districts to give students the best possible chance at completing transfer-level math and English within one year. In short, AB705 prevents colleges from forcing students into remedial sequences that have been proven to derail students’ educational goals. This workshop provides faculty members with an overview of why this bill came into existence along with some helpful strategies to support both students and instructors.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING WEEK
Held the week before school starts each Fall and culminating in Professional Learning Day (formerly FLEX Day), Professional Learning Week is an opportunity for faculty to reconnect and prepare for the new school year. Sessions are scheduled according to faculty interest as well as in response to institutional priorities. Faculty are eligible for Flex Credit for workshop attendance.

NEW FACULTY ACADEMY: WEST CONNECT
Each year, West welcomes a group of outstanding new faculty to our academic community.West Connect includes events for new and tenure-track faculty to provide information and resources; opportunities to expand perspectives by interacting and exchanging ideas with peers; and workshops relating to practical topics, instructional strategies, and implications for teaching.
West Connect is intended primarily for new and tenure-track faculty, but all faculty are welcome. Faculty are eligible for Flex Credit for workshop attendance.

TECH FAIR
West's Tech Fairs include workshops on using technology in the classroom and encourage faculty-to-faculty exchanges in using technology in courses and student services.
Tech Fair workshops are currently offered during Fall and Spring semesters. All workshops are open to faculty and staff who are able to attend. Faculty can file for Flex Credit for attending workshops.
