What is Black Scholars?

A Project L.E.A.R.N. Community

Black Scholars, a Project L.E.A.R.N. Community at West Los Angeles College (WLAC), is a student-centered safe space focused on fostering student success for all students regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin or gender identification. Program participants are supported in skill acquisition, course completion and degree attainment.


History of Project L.E.A.R.N.

at West Los Angeles College 

Project L.E.A.R.N. began in 2011 to improve the educational outcomes of African American Males by increasing student capacity and strengthening their preparation and readiness to for academic achievement.   In 2016 the program was rebranded as Black Scholars.



Counseling/Advising, Tutoring and Academic Support, Resource Coordination,  Mentoring, Workshops & Seminars and Alumni Support

  • Exposure to new career fields, colleges, and universities
  • Support from our LEARN faculty and staff to achieve your educational and personal goals
  • Workshops in areas such as: financial literacy, exploring your health, success strategies in math and test-taking, life skills, transfer preparation for LEARN students, and more
  • Special opportunities to meet experts in various industries and areas of expertise
  • The opportunity to join a cohort of students determined to succeed
