The Bus - Satisfied Customers

The WLAC Shuttle has made getting to class easier for many students.  Here's what they have to say about the bus service:

TAMIS (left) is in his first semester at West, studying forensics and health, and looking to transfer to USC. He takes the WLAC Shuttle to Inglewood. "My car's in the shop, so I take the WLAC Shuttle to school now.  It's faster than normal buses, and better yet, it's free!" says Tamis.   MINDALAY (center) and her daughter Natalie take the WLAC Shuttle along the Slauson route. Mindalay, a child development major, is in her first semester at West. "It's a big help, because it brings us all the way back to my house.  It's fast and easy too," says Mindalay.  LORENA is a 1st year undecided major at West.  She wants to transfer to UC Berkeley or UCLA, and she takes the WLAC Shuttle to and from her work in Fox Hills. "The bus is great for people like me, who have a busy work and class schedule and need to get to places on time," says Lorena.

Valencia (not pictured) drives the bus. When asked how the program seems to be going from her perspective, she replied "it's got a community feel." She sees a lot of "regulars." On the wish lists of students, she said, is that the Slauson route be extended to Rampart for improved safety and that the Palms route go farther North.

Earn $$$ For West While Shopping

Ralphs has a long-term program in which part of your grocery bill is donated to West.  In this program, if one hundred families, each of which purchases $100 per week in groceries, participate in the program, over $10,000 per year would be contributed to the WLAC Foundation. . .learn more

Dr. Patricia Siever Elected to Board of CCUSD

Despite a late entry to the race, Culver City residents elected Dr. Patricia Siever to the Board of the Culver City Unified School District. Dr. Siever is a Professor of History at West and the long-time, former director of the ACT program. Dr. Siever is also very active in leadership roles at West. It is anticipated that her new association with CCUSD will help to further strengthen the ties between West and the schools that surround it.

West's IHSS Program Featured in LA Times

The October 27 Los Angeles Times education supplement ran an article titled "Beyond Doctors and Nurses."  The article highlighted West's new provider certification for in-home support services (IHSS), which will be free to students "thanks to a state-funded Career Advancement Academy grant."  The Times also pointed out West's wide array of training in health-care careers, "ranging from dental hygiene and pharmacy technology to courses for emergency medical technicians and paramedics."

West Hosts Art Exhibit Examining the Shared Consciousness

"Newman's Subconscious," a group exhibition of contemporary art meant to stimulate confusion and contemplation on the concepts of shared identity and the nature of the self, will be on display at the WLAC Art Gallery from Oct. 19 - Dec. 4, Mon-Fri from 10am - 4pm.

Flu Season Information

POTENTIAL CAMPUS CLOSURES: As advised by the Center for Disease Control and the Los Angeles Community College District administration, it is unlikely that the campus will close in the event of student or employee being diagnosed with the H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu). Instead, the campus will promote healthy practices on campus. However, Faculty/Students should be prepared to move into a distance learning format for class in the event that the instructor and/or a large number of students become ill. Faculty and students should be sure they have each other's respective contact information. Please do report any suspected/confirmed case of H1N1 (Swine Flu) to your supervisor/instructor. This information will be kept confidential.

Instructors do have the authority to ask students to leave the classroom who are clearly ill. This should be done discretely and students should be directed to the WLAC Health Center (A-9) -- Hours: M,W,Th 8:30am-5:00pm; T 10:30am-7:00pm; F 9:00am-12:00pm.
