Previously Held Workshops

The workshops below document part of our SLO journey and provide some institutional history for how our assessment process has evolved over time. This journey is important to document for our Accreditation standards and will be reflected in future reports. New workshops are available each semester and are announced via e-mail to all faculty, staff and administrators. 

SLO Experiences

This workshop will provide faculty current Student Learning Outcome insights in multiple disciplines. Faculty will discuss their experiences and observations when assessing and implementing changes in their classes.

Course SLO Assessment and Dialogue Workshops

These faculty workshops are two-fold. The first hour will be dedicated to completing your assessments and the second hour will be set aside for faculty discussion on SLO findings. What will you will need to attend these workshops? You'll need the student data (assessment scores) to complete your SLO assessment tool. If you used a detailed rubric that the form cannot accommodate, you may want to bring a copy of that rubric with you. Bring any sample student projects-essays, research projects, skill evaluation forms, department exams, papers, or written exams-to illustrate scores according to the rubric. You'll need to submit one sample for each value on the rating/rubric scale. I will attach it to your assessment tool. I will be available to answer any questions about populating the form at the workshop as well.

The SLO Assessment Cycle and How to Approach It

West is working on a three-semester assessment cycle for the assessment of student learning outcomes.  This workshop will focus on the assessment, revision, and implementation of changes in course SLOs.


West is using a course assessment tool for faculty to more easily document their assessments. The use of this tool will be described in detail. At this workshop, tools that have already been completed will be reviewed as examples. Faculty will be encouraged to begin to think about courses that they will be teaching and assessing this spring.

Assessing Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

West is working on a three-semester assessment cycle of student learning outcomes. After courses have been assessed, faculty collaborate on these findings and implement changes for future courses. This workshop details an assessment of the program as a whole.


This workshop will focus on the assessment, possible revision, and implementation of changes  program learning outcomes or PLOs. West is using a program/degree assessment tool as well as a certificate assessment tool for faculty to more easily document this assessment data. The use of these tools will be described in detail. Completed tools will be reviewed as examples, and faculty will be encouraged to begin to think about the program they may be assessing this spring.

SLO Podcast (May 2010)

Dr. Boutry, Ms. Smith, and Dr. Woldehaimanot attended the WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) Level II Retreat on Student Learning and Assessment in Honolulu on January 28-30, 2010.  This podcast includes some discussion of what they learned.
