Bachelor Dental Hygiene Admissions

Class of 2021 Application Deadline Closed on 3/1/2019 at 5 p.m.

For class of 2022, starting Fall 2020 application will be available November 2019.

Application Process for Prospective Students

Step 1 

Attend Basic Skill 75 (BS 75) Information Sessions for Dental Hygiene and be registered as Health Science Major Interested Student

This is a new process at West Los Angeles College for all health science majors for 2018-2019 year.  All students who has interest in Dental Hygiene program will be asked to take surveys and basic skill assessment test.  This new process is intended to support and guide the students who are interested in health science field to be efficiently complete the requirements to enroll in the program.

Step 2 

Submit an online application to West Los Angeles College and Obtain Student I.D. #

If you are not a current WLAC student (i.e. you have not been enrolled in classes within the past two semesters), you must submit an online application to West Los Angeles College.  Visit and click Apply in the upper right-hand corner.  BS 75 session will also offer the college enrollment process during the session. If you are not active students, make sure to apply for the current semester. Once logged into your CCCApply account, submit a new application to WLAC.

International students must also submit an I-20 application along with supporting documentation to West. For more information, visit or call 310-287-7283.


Step 3

Complete Prerequisites Courses

It is highly recommended that all the prerequisite courses are completed before applying.  One course is allowed to be in progress during the Spring semester prior to the start of the program. 

  • ANATOMY 001 - Introduction to Human Anatomy w/Lab (4-5 units)
  • PHYSIOLOGY 001 - Introduction to Human Physiology w/Lab (4-5 units)
  • CHEM 051 OR 060 OR 101 - Fundamentals of Chemistry w/Lab (4-5 units)
  • CHEM 066 OR 221- Biochemistry w/Lab (4-5 units) - Biochemistry for Allied Health is acceptable
  • MICRO 020 - General Microbiology w/Lab (4-5 units)
  • COMM 101 - Public Speaking (3 units) - NOT interpersonal communication
  • PSY 001 - General Psychology (3 units)
  • SOC 001 - Introduction to Sociology (3 units)
  • ANTHRO 102 - Cultural Anthropology (3 units)
  • ENGLISH 103 - Critical Thinking (3 units)
  • MATH 227 0R 227-S - Statistics (4 units)

In addition, complete other required general education courses for transfer certification (CSU or IGETC) - meet your college counselor for certification requriements.

Step 4

Print out WLAC Dental Hygiene Application Form

Please print out as single sided pages.  Do not make double sided copies.  Read the instruction in the application packet.  The application packet will be updated annually.  Use the current accepting class application for the application.

ATI TEAS Test Information

  • All applicants must send the score of ATI TEAS test.  TEAS test score will be used part of the selection process.  This test must be taken within a year of applying to the program.

  • We encourege to take TEAS test outside the West Los Angeles College due to limited dates availablility at WLAC college.

  • We accept TEAS test for either Allied Health or Nursing.

  • TEAS test can be taken at PSI testing center throughout California with a cost. Contact ATI Testing for taking the TEAS at a testing center.  Please contact ATI testing center for preparation and further information about the exam.  www.

  • TEAS testing will be also offered through WESTSIDE EXTENSION. 
    • The TEAS testing dates will be scheduled in November, January and February.

Student Selection and Notifcation

Each year, 42 students are selected from a large number of qualified applicants based on the selection criteria listed below.  These criteria have been approved by the West Los Angeles College Academic Senate and are consistent with State regulations:

  • A minimum of 60 units of degree applicable lower division coursework
  • An overall minimum 2.5 GPA for all courses taken
  • An overall minimum 3.0 GPA in science prerequisite courses
  • Completion of all pre-requisite coursework
  • ATI TEAS Asessment Test Result (Target Score over 58%)

Additional Considerations are given to applicants who demonstrate the following:

  • Previous work experience in the dental field
  • Dental Assistant Licenses or Certifications
  • Completion of the following courses:
    • Nutrition (Family and Consumer Studies 21)
    • ALD HTH 033 - Medical Terminology
    • Organic Chemistry (Chemistry 211)
    • PHYSICS 006 - General Physics I OR PHYSICS  012 - Physics Fundamentals
    • Political Science 001
    • Completion of Non Credit Courses towards Pre-Dental Career Preparation Certificate. (Voc Ed 400 - Intro to Medical Terminology, Voc Ed 403 - Law and Ethics in Health Professions, Voc Ed 406 - Visual Spacial Perceptions and Psychomotor Skills Training)
  • Special Circumstance (military veteran, first generation college student, foster youth, EOP&S, CALWORKS)

Acceptance letters are sent by end of May.

Accepted students will be invited to the first dental hygiene program orienation end of June. The acceptecd student is required to request a background criminal record screening before the orientation.  

The student kit delivery day is scheduled at the end of July and the payment for the student kit is due on this day.

A physical examination, verification of immunity, vision test and a drug testing must be completed prior to the start of the program. Student health services can provide most of these tests at reduced student rates.
