Work Experience Education

 

The Work Experience Education (WEE) program helps students achieve their educational and career goals through jobs, internships and volunteer experiences. This is a unique experience for students because it provides an opportunity to combine classroom education with mentored work experience.

Get Started

To get started, first email the WEE Office to notify the team of your interest to enroll. Next, create your account using the Symplicity platform. You will use this account to submit your Work Experience Application.

Note: If you already have a WLAC Symplicty account, simply Log In

  1. The student must be employed, volunteering, or interning a minimum of 5 to 20 hours per week during the semester prior to registering for WEE.
  2. The student must inform their employer of their role in the WEE program since they will be approving and signing the program application (ELA), the evaluation forms, and timesheets to verify hours.
      Important: Self-employed students are eligible to participate if they can provide someone to objectively evaluate their work, and verify their hours.

If you do not have a job, you can participate in the Exploratory Work Experience class and receive a Work-Ready certificate after completing a career portfolio. Click here to see more information about Exploratory Work Experience.

Work Experience Program Overview

Here's how to get started:

Prospective students must first apply for admission if they are new or returning students who have not enrolled for more than one year in West Los Angeles College. To apply for admissions at WLAC, click here, and then click the blue "Apply Now!" button under "College Credit Application".

Remember you must:

  • Be employed, volunteering, or interning a minimum of 5 to 20 hours per week during the semester prior to registering for WEE.

Create you account on Symplicity, and select "Pathways" to begin the signup process.

Submit the Program Application & Workplace Learning Objectives via Symplicity with your employer's input and approval.

The WEE Application, Workplace Learning Objectives & Program Agreement (ELA), and the proof of orientation completion must be verified and approved by the WEE Coordinator before adjusting your student record, permitting you to register for a specific WEE course. You will then be provided with the section number and permission numbers (if applicable) of the classes you need to enroll in.

  • Once you enroll in the WEE Course, you must log in to canvas https://ilearn.laccd.edu to access the WEE canvas where all documents must be submitted.

  • Work the appropriate number of hours per unit enrolled during the length of the course.
  • Make sure to log in to Canvas at ilearn.laccd.edu to complete assignments and see instructor announcements
  • Maintain a record of your working hours on Symplicity. 
  • Submit reflection assignments on Symplicity.
  • Submit the Student Final Self-Evaluation.
  • Attend the Midterm meeting and Exit meeting.
  • Submit Exit Survey (extra credit).

Work Ready Certification Program

The Exploratory Work Experience Education – Work-Ready Certification program (0.5 credit units) is designed to verify that students have basic workplace skills that Los Angeles County businesses expect.

Holding a Work Readiness Certification will give the student a distinct advantage when applying for a job. Your skills will be tested and evaluated, and you will be awarded a certificate from the City of LA after completion of a career portfolio, which includes:

  • Resume
  • Generic Job Application
  • Mock Interview Feedback Form
  • Student Linked-In Account Verification
