Student Parent Services
West Los Angeles College is here to support students with dependent children to achieve academic success and complete their degree program. There are a wide range of on-campus, off-campus, and state student parent services and resources to assist you.
- Basic Needs - The Wildcats Den
Provides grocery giveaway pop-ups approximately twice per month, free snacks and limited household items (menstrual care, diapers, cleaning items) as well as clean clothing. - California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs)
- Provides cash aid and support to eligible students who live with a child or children.
- Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE)
- Brings additional benefits to Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) students who are parenting, receiving CalWORKs/TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) benefits, and are working towards getting a degree, transferring to a four-year university, or getting their credentials.
- Child Development Center
- Offers services for student-parents with children 12 months to 5 years of age while attending WLAC.
- Guardian Scholars & NextUp Foster Youth Program
- Supports former or current foster youth between ages 17-30 who want to go to college and pursue academic, career, and personal goals.
- Student Health Center
The Student Health Center is currently under renovation, but we offer telehealth and offsite health care. For an appointment, please call (323) 268-9191. While services are for the WLAC student, it is possible that our partner Via Care can help to provide access to affordable child centered health care. Coverage for West students that have paid their health fee includes first aid care, physical exams, women’s health, some vaccinations, mental health services, and sexual health and prevention services.
- CalFresh (Food Stamps)
- Helps low-income households increase their food-buying power to meet their household’s nutritional needs.
- CalWORKs Association
- Supports parenting students who are changing their own lives, two generations at a time.
- Department of Public Social Services
- Provides assistance to low-income families and individuals.
- LIFT
- Build families’ well-being, financial strength, and social connections to lift two generations at once.
- Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services
- Provides assistance to parents for preventive and support services.
- Neighborhood Legal Services Inc.
- Provides legal services in housing, public benefits, people with disabilities, and family services.
- The People’s Guide to Welfare Health and Other Services
- The standard guidebook of public social services for people working in the field, people in need of help, and those just helping their neighbors.
- Title IX (Pregnant or Parenting)
- Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex--including pregnancy and parental status--in educational programs and activities.
- Western Center on Law and Poverty
- Fights in courts, cities, counties, and in the Capitol to secure housing, health care, and a strong safety net for Californians with low incomes.
- California Earned Income Tax Credit (CITC or CalEITC)
- Students may be eligible for up to $3,417 for tax year 2022 as a working family or individual earning up to $30,000 per year.
- Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC)
- Helps families across the state by providing nutrition education, breastfeeding support, healthy foods, and referrals to health care and other community services.
- Young Child Tax Credit (YCTC)
- Provides a credit up $1,083 per tax return for Californians who qualify for CalEITC and have a child under 6 years old.
